Belfair Cows
In short, a Belfair is a cross between a Jersey, and a Dexter.
Dexter cattle are a miniature breed and the foundation of the Mini-Jersey breed. They are small and hearty. They thrive on pasture and are easy to raise. Dexters are known for their loving, 'puppy-dog' personalities.
Jersey cattle are a high producing dairy breed known for their excellent milk and cream production and easy, people pleasing manners.
A Belfair is the first step to a Mini-Jersey. By crossing the small but hearty dexter with a high producing Jersey we create a small, high producing, hearty, family friendly milk cow.
At Our Quilted Homestead, we began with our cow Madison, who is a beautiful cross between a White Dexter and a standard Jersey. Madison is serviced by (bred to) Dexter Corner's Doctor Luv, an exceptional Mini-Jersey bull.
Madison's calves are considered Mini-Jersey. Some refer to this Dexter heavy Jersey crossing (3/4 Jersey and 1/4 Dexter) as an "Irish Jersey" or "Mini Irish Jersey."
